《赛车总动员3：极速挑战》主要讲述了一代传奇赛车闪电麦昆通过背水一战，努力重返巅峰并由此领悟“车生”真谛的故事。闪电麦坤走到了赛车生涯的十字路口，他刚刚在与一位年轻选手黑风暴杰克逊的较量后失去了冠军头衔。在被风暴打败后，麦坤打算在训练最后一个赛季后就退休。他的合作伙伴是顶尖训练基地的老板斯特林，和他的王牌教练科鲁兹拉米雷斯。然而，斯特林之所以对他感兴趣，不是想让其复出，而是希望他退休，以便能在产品中获得授权使用闪电麦坤的形象。麦坤拒绝退出，跟斯特林定下协议，如果他能赢得本赛季的第一场比赛，他便可以等到自己想要时再退休，但如果他没有取胜，就必须立即退休。
