The Lancang-Mekong River is famous as "The Danube of the East". It rises in Qinghai Province of China， and flows through six countries： China， Laos， Myanmar， Thailand， Cambodia and Vietnam. Because of the special geographical situation， complex topography and landforms， as well as the diverse climate， this region harbors rich biodiversity. However， as inhabited by various ethnic groups who are economically undeveloped， this region has been drawing worldwide attention from the scientific， economic and political circles. At the beginning of the new millennium， the countries in the Lancang-Mekong River region are actively promoting economic cooperation and reforming relevant policies. Due to rapid expansion of local population and large scale infrastructure development which resulted in significant changes of the ecological environment， the effective management and scientific utilization of the biological resources of this region are urgently needed to achieve sustainable development.
